Born October 5, 1878, in Mitchell County, North Carolina. Received his M.D. from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1904, and obtained further training at Multnomah County Hospital, North Pacific Sanitarium, and Dr. Coffey Hospital in Oregon as well as the Vanderbilt Clinic in New York. Chief surgeon at Camp Lewis, WA, during World War I. Maintained a private practice in Lacrosse, WA, until returning to Portland in 1918.
